A game-based learning system for cognitive brain development Service -A Brain Gym. 2011-12-20

Facing the crisis of aging and the declining birthrate, how to maintain and enhance one’s cognitive ability has became a primary issue in medical and educational field. Research has pointed out that game-based learning system (computerized working memory training) can effectively improve fluid intelligence, enhance memory and reading ability. However, these statements lacked analysis and evaluation as how the e-learning system could enhance cognitive ability. Our brain is a "use and disuse" organ, Starting from the embryo, the progressive development of the nervous system, up until adulthood, our brains are in development. Process requires proper nutrition, appropriate stimulation of learning, in order to promote brain cell activation and coupling.


Research Method

This research used Input-Process-Outcome Game Model by Garris, Ahlers and Driskell to design and evaluate the effectiveness of the system for cognitive brain development. Based on the analysis of cognitive design variables, this research developed the content of the game-based learning system for cognitive brain including 2D flash, 3D simulation and Kinect. The system for cognitive brain development also included a detail results recording system which record every input data from users. Through analyzing the feedback from users, observation and records of the content, this research would be able to exam the effectiveness of cognitive game-based learning system.


Result and discussion

Based on the current records of the www.gyrigym.com , the average scores are as the Graphic 1.

Statistics shows that users have scored average between level 4 and level 5 which are pre-defined by the game design. By playing with cognitive games, the level of users’ cognitive abilities could be verified.

Graphic 2 shows the average distribution of game Memory Matrix 2. As it is an advanced memory game, the average user scores are lower than Memory Matrix and elderly users scores are below average mean.

Graphic 3 shows the progress of user #5 in seven weeks period . As www.gryigym.com currently holds a contest, users are likely to stop playing at level 3. However, by analyzing performance of user#5 in Identical Twins, results show that the response time in finding the identical twins has increased by 26.7%.


Conclusion

By analyzing the current records and statistics in www.gryigym.com, it is clear that with more practice, users improve their cognitive ability steadily. With proper designed cognitive games, they would be able to evaluate the cognitive ability of users at different age. Next step of this research will be to adjust the cognitive games design based on age differentiation that targeted on seniors and children.

GyriGym at 2011 Taipei International Conference of Innovative ICT Education2011-12-02

GyriGym were invited to present a showcase at 2011 Taipei International Conference of Innovative ICT Education. More than 400 participants from academic field converged at Taipei for this event at 2011.12.1~2.

During the showcase, participants tried out the latest Kinect development on site. One of the participants said that the game is really interesting and did help her exercise her brain literally.

The most popular games participants played was Chinese Proverbs game which not only provide high level of game play abut also incorporate the learning.

GyriGym had gained much of the attention during the event and participants showed highly interested in incorporating the system into their curriculum and course.

Building the First Healthcare Solution with Elderly Brain Exercise2011-11-17

According to 2011census of DGBAS, Taiwan’s elderly population(age 65 and up) attribute to 10.81% of total population which has exceeded the 7% threshold which World Health Organization defines as "aging society”. How to make the elderly healthy aging has become primary concerns of society. In view of this, Institute of Information Industry, Excelsior Healthcare Group , Taipei Veterans General Hospital and National Central University to create "the First Smart Health Care Solutions", held a conference introducing the innovative technology to senior citizens in particular to do with cognitive rehabilitation, recreation training center.

GyriGym teamed up with Taipei Veterans General Hospital and the Central University team developed brain training programs to make senior citizens willing to play games which exercise their brains and bodies。Healthcare workers will also be able to evaluate the cognitive ability of the seniors including attention, memory , visual-spatial abilities.

Residents of Excelsior Healthcare Group will be able to play programs on www.gyrigym.com, 3D experiments, Kinect technology to create a better, healthier living environment for the seniors.

Computing, problem solving ability. Even the facial features perception, emotion and motion control, are controlled by the brain to. Day of learning, work, play, loss of appetite, and sleep are closely related to that relationship.

The brain is a "use it or lose it"organ
Starting from the embryo, the progressive development of the nervous system, until adulthood far, we are in the development of the brain. Process requires proper nutrition, appropriate stimulation of learning in order to promote the activation of brain cells and connections. If not use it often, it may be rust. For example, living in caves not see the light of the fish, because there is no light stimulation, can not see anything, and slowly evolved into blind fish.

As with other organs of the body, along with aging, our brains will also suffer. If we do not treat it, it will get sick. It will slow down the speed, function will deteriorate, or become unstable. The brain also needs proper nutrition, adequate exercise, adequate rest, to maintain its best condition.

In fact, the mysteries of the brain so far, humans are still not fully solved. But everyone can try for your brain health to do more.

Routine Brain Exercise Can Boost your IQ2011-05-01

In a study conducted by University of Michigan at Ann Arbour, 90 subjects were found to have improved IQ through brain exercises. Moreover,it is evident that the amount of the improvement is directly proportional to the amount of exercise. (NewScientist, 2008/4)

In 2000, researchers at University College of London published results of brain imaging study on London taxi drivers who were preparing for the licensing examine. It was found that their brain sizes and shapes were significantly different compared to the brain of other taxi drivers, especially in the parts that are responsible for memory and orientations called parahippocampal gyrus (Draganski, et al., 2006).

Advanced Cognitive Training for Independent and Vital Elderly (Active), conducted trial on 2832 seniors in 2002. During the span of six weeks, the subjects were given 10 one-hour brain training sessions. The results showed improved performances in the exercises over the course of the six weeks trial period. In addition, these seniors’ ability to conduct their daily live also improved. The findings were further confirmed in 2006 by a separate follow up study. (Willis, et al., 2006)

Many studies have shown that some cognitive abilities, such as working memories and fluid intelligence, could be improved through exercises. Interactive multimedia are proven to be effective means to conduct such exercises. Their benefits are evident in many subjects for all age group.

A recent study conducted by University of New South Wales concluded that brain training exercises could alleviate mild cognitive impairment.

Studies have shown that fluid intelligence could be enhanced for anyone over age of 5. Adults showing early signs of decline could also delay the deterioration with proper training.
